According to information from the Vietnam-Japan Embassy, on March 21, 2026, 8 Vietnamese workers were in distress due to large waves in the sea area of Fukui prefecture. The incident killed 1 person, 3 people missing, 1 person injured is being cared for in the hospital and 3 people were rescued, not injured.
Immediately after receiving information about the incident, the Embassy urgently contacted relevant functional agencies and the Vietnamese Association in Fukui Prefecture to grasp the situation and coordinate the implementation of necessary citizen protection measures.
Through exchanges with local authorities, the Fukui Prefectural Coast Guard said that at about 2 am on March 21, they received a report about an accident caused by large waves in the breakwater area leading to the Mikuni lighthouse, causing some people to be swept into the sea. The Japanese side immediately dispatched ships and helicopters to the scene to deploy search and rescue operations.
The Vietnamese Embassy has directly contacted the rescued citizens to promptly provide support, protection, and ensure the legitimate and full rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens. Currently, Japanese authorities are continuing to search for 3 missing cases.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is urgently coordinating with relevant agencies, local authorities, and domestic functional agencies to continue to promote the search and rescue of missing people and conduct personal verification of victims, and promptly notify victims' families to promptly deploy necessary procedures for funerals.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Japan reminds citizens working and living in Japan not to go to sea during storms, not to go to areas with warnings of big waves, strong winds, dangerous terrain, especially at night to avoid unfortunate accidents.
