The latest storm and low pressure forecast on December 23 from the Philippine weather agency PAGASA said that a low pressure near the East Sea is expected to form right after storm Pabuk - storm number 10 in the East Sea.
PAGASA forecasts that during the week of December 30, 2024 to May 1, 2025, a new low pressure area is expected to form south of the Philippine Forecast Area (PAR). This low pressure area near the East Sea is forecast to have little chance of strengthening into a tropical storm.
Also in the forecast, PAGASA stated that during the week from December 23 to 29, tropical storm Romina (international name Pabuk) will be active in the East Sea.
Philippine typhoon forecasters said Pabuk was expected to move south of Vietnam before weakening and dissipating.
Also during the forecast period from December 23 to 29, apart from storm Pabuk, there is little possibility of any new tropical depression or storm appearing in PAGASA's PMD forecast area.
According to PAGASA’s December typhoon forecast, one to two tropical storms entered the Philippine forecast area. In mid-December, a tropical depression formed in the PAR and was named Querubin – the 17th storm name on the list of storm names for the 2024 Philippine typhoon season. However, Querubin did not strengthen into a typhoon.
On December 22, the Philippine weather agency PAGASA designated the tropical depression in the South China Sea as Romina. This is the first time since 1963 that PAGASA has assigned a local name to a tropical depression outside the Philippine PAR forecast area. The depression later strengthened into a storm of the same name.
Pabuk (storm number 10) is the international name for the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The name Pabuk was contributed by Laos and refers to a large fish species in the Mekong River and its tributaries.
Previously, from October 24 to November 18, 6 tropical storms of varying intensities, from strong storms to super typhoons, consecutively swept through the northern Philippines, including: Kristine (international name: Trami), Leon (international name: Kong-rey), Marce (international name: Yinxing), Nika (international name: Toraji), Ofel (international name: Usagi) and Pepito (international name: Man-yi).
