On November 6, in her first public comments since losing the 2024 White House race to former President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris called on supporters to "accept the results."
Speaking at her alma mater, Howard University, where the Democratic campaign held a watch party, Harris stressed: "While I concede defeat in this election, I do not concede defeat in the fight."
“The outcome of this election is not what we hoped for, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” she said. “But hear me, the light of America’s promise will always burn as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”
Ms Harris referred to Mr Trump as "president-elect" and said she had called to congratulate him on his victory. "I also told him that we would help him and his team transition power and that we would engage in a peaceful transition of power."
Ms Harris stressed that "a fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we must accept the results... Anyone who seeks the public's trust must respect that".
"We owe our allegiance not to a president or a party, but to the Constitution of the United States," the vice president stressed.
In the 2024 US presidential election held on November 5, Mr. Donald Trump won an overwhelming victory in the electoral votes and popular votes against Ms. Harris.
Republicans also won back the US Senate for the first time in four years and are leading Democrats in the House elections.
