NBC News and many major US media outlets predict that Donald Trump will be elected the 47th president of the United States - overcoming many obstacles during the 2-year campaign.
NBC News' post-election poll found that the factors that helped Donald Trump win the election this time included voters' frustration with their own financial situation and dissatisfaction with the national economy.
Nearly half (45%) of all voters said their financial situation was worse than it was four years ago, a higher proportion than has been recorded in exit polls since 2008 – the election amid the financial crisis that propelled Barack Obama to victory.
Despite a growing economy, with low unemployment and a booming stock market, two-thirds of voters say the US economy remains weak.
When voters were asked what qualities were most important in a candidate, a majority said they wanted someone with “leadership” or who could “bring about needed change.” Mr. Trump dominated that.
Mr. Trump won the support of one-third of black voters, possibly the best showing by any Republican presidential candidate since George W. Bush’s re-election bid in 2004.
Another factor is Mr Trump's appeal to Americans who are less engaged with politics and elections.
First-time voters support Mr Trump by 54% - compared to 45% for Kamala Harris.
Voters who have an unfavorable view of both candidates still favor Trump over Harris, 55%-32%. In 2020, Trump also beat Biden among this group of voters, 52%-35%. In 2016, this group of voters also helped Trump win his first term.
