Forecast of 1 of 3 low pressure areas in the Philippines strengthening into a severe storm

2 out of 3 low pressure systems surrounding the Philippines have strengthened into tropical depressions and one of them may continue to develop into a severe storm.

The latest storm forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that the low pressure in eastern Batanes has developed into a tropical depression and is named Julian.

At 5:00 a.m. on September 27, the center of the tropical depression was at about 20.9 degrees north latitude, 126.9 degrees east longitude, 525 km east of Itbayat, Batanes.

The strongest wind at the center of the tropical depression was 55 km/h, gusting to 70 km/h, the central pressure was 1004 hPa.

The tropical depression is moving southwest at a speed of 15 km/h. The range of strong winds extends out to 150km from the center of the tropical depression.

Julian is expected to follow a circular path over the seas east of Batanes and Cagayan over the next 5 days.

The tropical depression will initially move south-southwest and slowly on September 27, then move slowly westward on Saturday (September 28) and northwestward on Sunday (September 29), before accelerating northward on Monday (September 30) and Tuesday (October 1).

The tropical depression will continue to strengthen and will reach tropical storm level on September 29 and severe typhoon level on October 1.

In addition to Julian, PAGASA is also monitoring the tropical depression outside the Philippine Forecast Area (PAR).

As of 2:00 a.m. on September 27, the center of the tropical depression was at about 17.5 degrees north latitude, 146.4 degrees east longitude, 2,610 km east of Central Luzon.

Maximum winds near the center of the tropical depression are 55 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h and moving north-northeast at 15 km/h.

PAGASA is also monitoring another low pressure area outside the PAR at around 16.9 degrees north latitude, 137.6 degrees east longitude (at 2:00 a.m. on September 27), 1,710 km east of Central Luzong.

Due to the influence of the low pressure and tropical depressions, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Batanes, Cagayan areas including Babuyan and Isabela Islands, as well as Metro Manila and the rest of the Philippines will experience cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms, with the possibility of flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rain.

Moderate rough seas are expected over Batanes, Cagayan and Isabela, with waves 2.5 meters high.
