The latest storm news on the morning of May 28th from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Typhoon Jangmi is about 1,245km east of the Eastern Visayas region.
The storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center, gusts up to 80 km/h and central pressure of 1000 hPa.
Jangmi is moving north-northwest at a speed of 10 km/h and is expected to continue moving in this direction until it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the evening of May 28 or morning of May 29. The storm will be renamed Domeng when entering PAR.
During the remaining forecast period, Typhoon Jangmi will move northwest to north when it is in the Philippine Sea" - PAGASA said.
The latest storm is forecast to continue to strengthen and may reach strong typhoon level on May 30.
Philippine typhoon forecasters predict that the typhoon may reach its maximum intensity from about noon on May 30 to May 31 when it is in the Philippine Sea, then gradually weaken.
PAGASA said that the latest typhoon Jangmi is "few likely to make landfall".
Due to the eastward shift of the latest forecast path, the issuance of a tropical storm warning in the northernmost Luzon region is unlikely to occur, but it is not ruled out," the agency said.
Typhoon Jangmi is also likely to strengthen southwest winds starting from May 30.
According to Taiwan (China) weather forecasters, Typhoon Jangmi is likely to pass near the east of the island but also does not rule out the possibility of affecting the weather here. Typhoon Jangmi is expected to reach southern Japan around June 2 or 3.
Due to the impact of Typhoon Jangmi, strong winds and big waves will occur in the east, southeast and north of Taiwan (China) from May 31 to June 2. Ships and boats should be wary of waves from 1.5 to 2.5m high.
The intensity of the nearby high pressure area will determine how close the typhoon moves to Taiwan (China). Depending on this high pressure, Jangmi may divert to Japan earlier than expected, reducing the impact on this island.
