The German Federal Prosecutor's Office confirmed to AFP that a man has been prosecuted for the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosion. German media said that this person is a Ukrainian citizen and is believed to be the commander of the Nord Stream sabotage operation.
According to German prosecutors, this is the suspect who was arrested in Italy in the summer of 2025 and extradited to Germany in November of the same year. At that time, this person was identified as Serhii Kuznietsov.
The law firm representing Kuznietsov confirmed to AFP that his client was prosecuted on charges of "attacking civil energy infrastructure, causing an explosion with explosives and destroying construction works".
According to German media, investigators believe that Kuznietsov was the commander on the yacht used to carry out the sabotage.
The suspect is currently being detained in Hamburg and will have to appear in court in the near future.
The evidence collected by the investigating agency is described as very convincing. Accordingly, the suspect is believed to have unintentionally revealed his actions in phone calls with relatives and friends while being detained in Italy.
At the time of the arrest, German prosecutors said that Kuznietsov used fake personal papers to rent a yacht departing from Rostock, Germany to carry out the attack.
ARD television reported that investigators discovered traces of military explosives on the yacht. 7 suspects have been identified in the case.
Last year, a Polish court rejected Germany's request to extradite another Ukrainian suspect in the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage.
