On November 4, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto commented on the new reports from the European Commission on the expansion package and Brussels' plans to start talks to join Kiev before the end of this year.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto affirmed that the country will not let Ukraine become a member of the European Union (EU).
He stressed that EU expansion must have absolute consensus from all member states, and the Hungarian people have expressed a clear view that they do not want Ukraine to join. The statement came after the European Commission published a new report on the expansion package and proposed starting negotiations with Kiev.
According to TASS, Mr. Szijjarto said that EU leaders want to put the opposition party Tisza to power because this force is ready to support Ukraine's path to join the EU. He said such a goal would put Europe at risk of war. He stressed that Hungary would not accept that because the people did not want conflict.
The Hungarian government has repeatedly warned that it will block any efforts to accelerate Ukraine's EU entry into the EU, saying the move could destroy the European economy and cause military confrontation with Russia. Budapest also asked Kiev to restore the rights of the Hungarian community in the Trans-Carpathian region.
At the EU summit in Brussels on June 26, Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked a joint statement in support of Ukraine, which was seen as a step to facilitate negotiations on joining. On the same day, Hungary announced the results of the poll with 2 million participants, of which 95% opposed accelerating Ukraine's process towards EU membership.
