German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Western forces deployed in Ukraine as part of post- ceasefire security guarantees could retaliate if Russia conducts new attacks.
We will ensure security for a non-military zone between the two sides and also take action in response to violations and corresponding attacks from Russia, Mr. Merz said in an interview with local television channel.
The US commitment to protect Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, considering it NATO territory, in my opinion, is a notable new stance of Washington, Merz added.
Observers say that Merz's attitude is no different from a provincial move, which could spark a strong reaction from Russia, in the context that Moscow has always maintained a tough stance against the presence of any European soldiers in Ukraine.
The statement came after European leaders expressed optimism about the results of discussions to find a solution to the conflict, led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials with US special delegates Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Berlin (Germany) on December 14-15.

The participants agreed on a new proposal of 6 points. In particular, post-conflict guarantees will include a multinational force led by Europe, backed by the US, deployed in Ukraine to enhance the country's military capabilities and help ensure security at sea and in the air.
France, the UK and several other countries have signaled their readiness to contribute soldiers under the framework of the Coalition of Countries ready to take action, while German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has been more cautious, saying many key questions regarding the forces mission have not been clarified.
Mr Zelensky admitted that he has made progress in some areas, especially in Article 5 of NATOs security guarantees, but warned that there is still no consensus on territorial issues.
Moscow has so far shown goodwill to make reservations about its tough demands, including banning Kiev from joining NATO and demanding control of the entire Lugansk and Donetsk regions.
