Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan informed on July 27 about Thailand and Cambodia agreeing to let Malaysia mediate in the border conflict.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are expected to visit Malaysia on the evening of July 28.
"They have full confidence in Malaysia and ask me to mediate," Foreign Minister Mohamad said.
The top Malaysian diplomat also said he had discussed with his Cambodian and Thai counterparts. The parties agreed that no other country should participate in this issue.
The talks in Malaysia took place after Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim - rotating ASEAN Chairman - proposed a ceasefire on July 25 and US President Donald Trump announced on July 26 that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to cooperate on a ceasefire.
Four days after the worst fighting in more than a decade broke out between the two neighbors of Southeast Asia, the death toll has reached more than 30, including 13 civilians in Thailand and 8 civilians in Cambodia. More than 200,000 people have been evacuated from the border area between Thailand and Cambodia.
