On November 8, local authorities said a tornado accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain had hit the southern Brazilian state of Parana, killing six people.
Rio Bonito town by Iguaçu was hit hardest on the evening of 7 November (local time), when civil defense agency Parana said more than half of the urban area had collapsed and many structures were severely damaged.
A series of roads were blocked, power lines were broken.
In addition to the 6 victims who died, the tornado also injured 437 others, while about 1,000 people had to be evacuated.
The neighboring city of Guarapuava was also affected.
According to the Parana Meteorological and Environmental Monitoring System, the wind speed in the tornado reached 180 km/h to 250 km/h.
Minister of Planning and Investment Gleisi Hoffmann said she will work with health minister Adriano Massuda and federal officials to visit the affected area on November 8 to support relief and reconstruction work.
We will continue to support the people of Parana state and provide all necessary assistance, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wrote on X network, expressing his condolences to the victims families.
