A spokesperson for United State Airline said that all passengers were notified to leave the plane immediately by escape route immediately after the plane landed safely at Kansai International Airport at around 7pm on September 12 (local time).
"The passengers have been taken to the terminal by bus," United Airlines said in a statement.
However, 2 passengers were slightly injured during the escape. They were then taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to United Airlines.
Before deciding to make an emergency landing decision, the captain discovered a fire alarm in the cockpit, informing them that the fire may be taking place in the luggage compartment.
However, according to a United Airlines spokesperson, the maintenance team did not detect any signs of a fire after initial inspection.
The United Airlines flight in distress, coded 32, was traveling from Narita (Japan) to Cebu (Philippines). The aircraft performing the flight is the Boeing 737-800.
Aircraft tracking data on the Flightradar24 website shows that the Boeaing 737-800 departed from Tokyo at around 5:40 p.m. (local time). According to the flight diary, the plane flew for 50 minutes in the Philippines before returning to Japan.
United's flight then landed at Kansai airport, which serves commercial air transport needs to Japan's cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe.
There were 135 passengers and 7 crew members on board.
A 40-year-old Japanese passenger who asked to remain anonymous said he "feeled a bit nervous" when informed of the emergency landing.
"After the emergency landing, we were instructed to evacuate, which scared me. It took about five minutes to evacuate," the passenger added.
