The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and American Airlines said that the reason for the plane's emergency landing was due to a minor fire from a passenger electronic device.
Flight 357 landed safely at Dulles International Airport, Virginia after receiving a report of smoke from a customers device, American Airlines reported.
The airline added that immediately after the discovery, the device was quickly controlled by the crew members before landing.
However, officials did not specify what type of device it was.
After that, rescue workers were present at the runway when the plane landed at around 11:50 a.m. (local time), on August 23.
In an interview, 22-year-old passenger Adriana Novello said she was awakened by one of the flight attendants who jumped onto her seat to get a fire extinguisher.
She said: "After that, I started to smell the smoke and many people on the plane had coughs. Looking back, we saw something burning in the path."
The flight took off from Philadelphia and was flying to Phoenix. The airline said there were 160 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
The FAA said the case is still under further investigation.
