Emirates' Boeing 747 carrying goods had a serious problem in the early morning of October 20 when landing at Hong Kong International Airport (China), slipping off the runway and crashing into a ground service vehicle, killing two people.
The plane crash occurred at around 3:50 a.m. on October 20 (local time) when Emirates EK9788 flight from Dubai landed on the runway north of Hong Kong International Airport (China).
The plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a ground service vehicle, before much of the plane's body crashed into coastal waters around the airport, police said.
witnesses said that a loud noise accompanied by high smoke in the runway area caused the Boeing 747 to lose control. The Hong Kong Rescue and Airport Services (China) immediately deployed helicopters and rescue boats to search for the missing people.
Two men working on a service car fell into the sea after a strong collision. One (30 years old) was taken away but died on the spot at 5:55, the other (41 years old) was taken to North Lantau Hospital and died at 6:26.
All four members of the Emirates crew survived, with no injuries.
The northern runway of Hong Kong (China) has been temporarily blocked to serve the investigation and salvage of the vehicle.
The authorities said they are working with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Authority (HKCAD) and Emirates to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The crashed plane was a Boeing 747F, a large cargo plane, departing from Dubai on the night of October 19 and expected to land in Hong Kong (China) in the early morning of October 20 to transit goods.
The plane crash occurred amid the active storm No. 12 Fengshen near the southern coast of China.
The Hong Kong Observatory of China (HKO) said it will consider issuing a storm No. 3 warning from 5pm to 7pm on October 20, as Typhoon Fengshen approaches the city.
Under the combined impact of Typhoon Fengshen and monsoon, the weather will continue to have wind and clouds, with rain in the next few days. Rain will be more frequent on October 21 and early morning of October 22.
Typhoon Fengshen is expected to strengthen into a typhoon and be about 400km from Hong Kong (China) on the morning of October 21, before weakening and moving southwest towards Vietnam.
Winds around the center of the storm are expected to reach 110km/h on October 21.
According to weather forecasts, temperatures in urban areas of Hong Kong (China) are also expected to drop to around 19 degrees Celsius on October 21 and 23.
