On May 28 (US time), according to CNN, the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is planning to prepare for the possibility of issuing a commemorative banknote of 250 USD with the image of US President Donald Trump.
A US Treasury Department spokesman confirmed that the agency is taking "appropriate preparations and necessary appraisal" regarding a bill being considered in the US Congress.
In case the bill is passed, BEP will proceed to issue a commemorative banknote of 250 USD to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States," a representative of the US Treasury Department said.
According to CNN, Republican Senator Joe Wilson has proposed a bill aimed at "being symbolic to honor the US President on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country". However, the bill has not yet made much progress in Congress.
Currently, US law does not allow printing surviving images on the national currency. Therefore, if the US Congress wants to put Mr. Trump's portrait on the new banknote, it will have to pass a special exception.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he did not see anything "inappropriate" with the idea of issuing a commemorative banknote bearing Mr. Trump's image, but emphasized that the final decision belonged to the Congress.
The preliminary design of the bill was previously posted by Republican Congressman Andy Barr on X social network in January. The image shows a Trump portrait appearing on the US flag color background with the "250" logo and the president's signature.
The US Treasury Department also confirmed that Mr. Trump's signature is expected to appear on the banknote if the plan is approved.
Based on the proposal of US Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach, Secretary Bessent will recognize the historical achievements of the United States and President Trump by adding his signature to the currency," the Treasury Department spokesman added.
According to CNN, US officials also emphasized that this plan will not use people's tax money because BEP is a financially autonomous agency and does not depend on the budget allocated by Congress.
