Ukraine is facing one of the biggest risks since the beginning of the conflict: The possibility of losing support from the US, according to revelations from Ukrainska Pravda newspaper.
Sources close to President Volodymyr Zelensky's group said that after the talks on March 21-22, Washington does not believe Kiev can accept the "key issue" of withdrawing from the Donbass region.
“That could make them completely abandon the process and shift their attention to Iran, to the election... They are even willing to provide real security assurances if we withdraw from Donbass. But I don't know how Ukraine will do it,” the source said.
The withdrawal from Donbass is considered an extremely sensitive step, even "unacceptable" to Kiev, as this region is the focus of a conflict that has lasted for many years.
The US setting such conditions shows the increasing pressure on Ukraine to seek a political solution, instead of continuing to depend entirely on military aid.
Amidst the escalating Middle East conflict, Kiev is concerned that Western attention is shifting. This could reduce the flow of weapons aid - a vital factor for Ukraine.
President Donald Trump recently also sent a tough signal when declaring that the US does not need support from Ukraine, including in dealing with drones from Iran.
He also expressed surprise at the fact that Kiev is not ready to reach an agreement to end the conflict.
According to sources, if the deadlock continues, Washington may reduce the priority for Kiev, shifting focus to other urgent issues such as the Middle East or domestic politics.
This puts Kiev in a difficult position, either accepting painful concessions, or facing the risk of losing its most important support.
