On May 6 (US time), CNN reported that the US and Iran are discussing the possibility of Iran temporarily suspending uranium enrichment activities for more than 10 years. This plan also includes the removal of high-grade enriched uranium in Iran.
According to sources quoted by CNN, the two sides are discussing a short plan, about a page long, to declare an end to the conflict and open a 30-day negotiation phase.
During this time, the US and Iran will continue to exchange views on controversial issues. The main contents include Iran's nuclear program, the release of Tehran's frozen assets and ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz.
This is considered one of the key points in the contacts between Washington and Tehran. Iran's uranium enrichment program has long been a source of tension between this country and the US and Western allies.
While Iran affirms that its nuclear program serves civilian purposes, Washington and some other countries are concerned that Tehran may get closer to its nuclear weapons manufacturing capabilities.
According to CNN, the White House has received a message from the Pakistan mediator, showing that Tehran may be ready to compromise. After this signal, US President Donald Trump announced the suspension of Project Freedom - the US naval plan to escort merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic maritime route, playing an important role in global oil transportation. Therefore, security issues in this region are included in the group of contents to be negotiated along with Iran's nuclear program and frozen assets.
It is not yet clear whether Iran will accept all the terms being discussed. This plan is still in the process of discussion and is not yet a final agreement.
If consensus is reached, the 30-day negotiation phase could become the first step to reduce tensions between the US and Iran.
