Speaking on social network Max on April 4, Mr. Medvedev said that internal conflicts within the European Union (EU) are increasing, especially after developments related to the campaign in Iran.
In that context, according to him, some European politicians - especially in Brussels - are seriously considering building a complete military component for the bloc.
This will change the entire world situation" - Mr. Medvedev said, while emphasizing that the EU is no longer simply an economic union as before.
According to Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, former President Medvedev, for a long time, Russia has maintained a "restrained and calm" stance on neighboring countries joining the EU, including with Ukraine. Russia once considered this an economic option and not a direct threat to security.
However, Mr. Medvedev said that the current context has fundamentally changed. "Now, the EU is no longer just an economic union but can quickly turn into a comprehensive military alliance, extremely hostile to Russia, even worse in some aspects than NATO," he said.
Mr. Medvedev also criticized some European politicians for "inciting anti-Russian sentiment" to serve political goals and economic interests. According to him, this trend could push Russia-EU relations into a deeper spiral of confrontation.
Regarding relations between post-Soviet countries and the EU, Mr. Medvedev cited the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin in an exchange with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Accordingly, Moscow does not object to Yerevan strengthening relations with the EU, but emphasized that Armenia cannot simultaneously participate in two tariff unions - both with the EU and with the Eurasian Economic Union.
