On July 1 (Moscow time), according to TASS, Russian Federation Council Vice Chairman Konstantin Kosachev declared that any military action by Ukraine against Belarus would face a general reaction from Moscow and Minsk.
Speaking in an interview with TASS, Mr. Kosachev emphasized that Russia and Belarus are not only strategic partners but also military allies within the framework of the Union State. According to him, the special relationship between the two countries makes any threat against Belarus considered a common security issue.
When asked whether Russia would intervene to protect Belarus if the Ukrainian army launched an attack, the senator affirmed that the answer was completely clear.
There is no doubt. We are part of the Coalition State and are military allies. Anyone who discusses the possibility of launching a military campaign against Belarus needs to understand that they will face a common response from our two allied countries," Kosachev said.
The statement of the Russian legislator was made in the context of escalating tensions between Kiev and Minsk after recent statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
On June 19, Mr. Zelensky warned that Kiev could order an attack on equipment that he believes is being deployed on Belarusian territory, along the border with Ukraine, if these equipment are not withdrawn within a week.
The Ukrainian leader said that some infrastructure near the border is being used for military purposes. He also declared that technical towers in this area are equipped with relaying equipment.
The Belarusian side has not given a detailed response to the above statements, but Minsk has long affirmed that it does not directly participate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, Belarus still maintains close military and security relations with Russia through bilateral cooperation mechanisms and regional organizations.
In recent years, Russia and Belarus have expanded defense cooperation, organized many joint exercises and strengthened coordination in the field of security.
