On July 29, a reform camp in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine was destroyed after a series of airstrikes by Russian forces, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 35.
Governor Zaporizhzhia, Ivan Fedorov, said on the Telegram app that the camp's buildings were completely destroyed, while many nearby houses were damaged.
Fedorov said the Russian military had launched eight strikes in the area, which were believed to have used highly explosive bombs. The airstrikes come as the Zaporizhzhia region has been a frequent target of drone, missile and bomb attacks from Russia since the conflict began in 2022.
Russia had partially annexed Zaporizhzhia and three other regions of Ukraine at the outset of the conflict.
Chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Andriy Yermak, condemned the attacks. On the X platform, Mr. Yermak emphasized that the administration of Russian President Vladimir Putin needs to be subject to economic and military sanctions.
There has been no official response from Russia to the incident.
