Ukrainian authorities said eight people, including a 3-year-old child, were injured in a Russian missile and drone attack on the capital Kiev. The incident occurred at midnight on July 27 in Darnytskyi district, on the left bank of the Dnipro river, causing a multi-storey apartment building to be severely affected.
Mr. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev military administration, said that 4 of the victims had been taken to the hospital, of which 1 was in critical condition. According to Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the shock waves from the explosion broke the windows of apartments from the 6th to the 11th floors of the building that were hit.
Throughout the night, the capital Kiev and much of Ukraine were put on airstrike alert after the Ukrainian air force issued a warning about the risk of Russian missile launches and drone attacks.
In central Ukraine, the city of Kropyvnytskyi was also attacked. The region's governor, Andriy Raikovych, said rescue forces were present at the scene to assess the damage.
Faced with the possibility of missiles flying into the border area with Poland - a NATO member - the Polish air force has mobilized aircraft to ensure the safety of national airspace.
The scale of the attack is still unclear. Reuters witnesses said they heard several loud explosions overnight in Kiev, which appeared to be the actions of air defense units.
Russia has not yet commented on the attack. Both sides denied deliberately targeting civilians in the conflict. However, thousands of people on both sides have died since the conflict broke out in 2022.
