On July 3, reacting to the decision to cut aid, Ukrainian lawmaker Mariana Bezuglaya said on social media: "The United States is no longer our ally."
She recalled her previous statement that President Donald Trump should take care of himself and said that this was even more true now. Ms. Bezuglaya accused Mr. Trump of assisting Russia in moving towards Dnepr and Sumy, referring to Moscows military activities to establish buffer zone protections for Russian border areas.
Member Solomiya Bobrovskaya - a member of the National Defense and Intelligence Commission of Ukraine - said that Ukraine "is no longer a priority" and "is no longer at the center of US foreign policy". Trump has been very straightforward with Ukrainians about that, she said.
The above statements were made after the US decided to temporarily suspend the supply of a number of weapons, including anti-aircraft ammunition, missiles and artillery shells. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said the move was part of President Donald Trump's "America First" policy, which prioritizes domestic needs.
Responding to the situation, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned the authorized US ambassador to Kiev - Mr. John Ginkel - to emphasize the importance of continuing to deliver the previously allocated defense aid packages, while warning that any delay would prolong the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met with President Trump at a NATO summit in The Hague to request an additional patriot air defense system, but did not receive a specific commitment. Mr. Trump said that these systems are very difficult to get and that the US needs them for domestic defense purposes and for Israel.
Russia has repeatedly condemned the Western weapons supply to Ukraine, saying it only escalates violence without changing the outcome of the conflict. President Vladimir Putin affirmed that Russia is currently taking the initiative on the entire front line. After pushing Ukrainian forces back from Russia's Kursk region in March 2025, the war has spread to Ukraine's Sumy region. Moscow said the goal of the operation was to create a buffer zone to protect civil life in border areas of Russia.
