The decree to replace the Commander of the Russian army has been announced by the Kremlin, according to the Telegraph.
The personnel changes came just a week after General Salyukov, 70, oversaw a Russia Victory Day parade on May 9 in Moscow.
This is the latest move to remove a senior figure from the Russian military force in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.
After leaving the position of Commander of the Russian army, Mr. Salyukov will work as deputy to former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at the Russian Security Council.
In May last year, Mr. Sergei Shoigu was transferred to the position of Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, the top advisory body of the Kremlin, headed by President Putin. This agency is responsible for managing and integrating national security policies. The Security Council of Russia does not have direct authority over Russian agencies and the Ministry of Security.
General Salyukov has been in charge of the Russian military since 2014, overseeing its participation in the Syrian civil war and the conflict in Ukraine. He previously held the position of Deputy Chief of the General Staff for 4 years.
The decision to replace the Army Commander was made while Russian and Ukrainian officials were negotiating in Istanbul. It is not yet clear who will replace General Oleg Salyukov as Commander of the Russian army.
