Russian President Vladimir Putin had a "frank and professional" phone call with his US counterpart Donald Trump on April 29.
In a phone conversation lasting an hour and a half, the two Russian and US leaders discussed many topics. The two sides also agreed to maintain contact, including personal conversations and negotiations at the advisory and special envoy level.
The phone call on April 29 was the 12th phone call between the two leaders of Russia and the United States since Mr. Trump returned to the White House in early 2025. The previous phone call took place on March 9.
In the phone call, President Vladimir Putin told President Donald Trump that he was ready to declare a ceasefire on Victory Day. "Mr. Trump has actively supported this initiative, saying that this holiday marks our common victory over fascism in World War 2" - Russian Presidential Advisor for International Affairs, Mr. Yury Ushakov, informed.
Regarding the conflict situation in Ukraine, Mr. Trump told Mr. Putin that "an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine is within reach". "The US President emphasized the importance of ending the conflict as soon as possible, as well as being ready to do everything in his power to facilitate this. His representatives will continue to maintain dialogue with both Moscow and Kiev" - Mr. Ushakov said.
President Putin emphasized that Russia wants to achieve the goals of the special military operation through negotiations, but "for this to happen, Mr. Zelensky must give a positive response to the proposals that have been made many times, including from the US side".
According to Mr. Ushakov, President Putin expressed his appreciation for the personal efforts of US First Lady Melania Trump in reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children with their families and asked the US President to convey his birthday wishes to her.
The two leaders paid special attention to the situation in Iran and the Persian Gulf. "Mr. Vladimir Putin believes that Mr. Donald Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran is correct, because it will create opportunities for negotiations and help stabilize the general situation" - Mr. Ushakov said.
The Kremlin's aide continued: "Mr. Trump has made clear his assessment of the results of the recent military confrontation, as well as his views on the difficult situation that Iran and its leaders are facing.
Mr. Putin condemned the shooting at an event that President Trump attended on the evening of April 25, "at the same time emphasizing the unacceptability of any form of politically motivated violence". The date of the shooting was emphasized in the conversation that took place right before Melania Trump's birthday, who was born on April 26, 1970.
The Russian and US presidents also discussed the prospects of mutually beneficial projects in the economic and energy sectors. "When discussing Russia-US relations, both sides highlighted the great prospects of mutually beneficial projects in the economic and energy sectors. All large-scale initiatives in the economic sector, as the presidents noted, have been specifically discussed by representatives of the two countries," Mr. Ushakov said.
