Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet in Florida (USA) to discuss plans to end the conflict in Ukraine on December 28 (US time).
During the meeting, Mr. Zelensky planned to exchange with Mr. Trump about the future of the Donbass region, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and other related issues.
Moscow has repeatedly asked Kiev to cede all of Donbass, including areas still controlled by Kiev, and has opposed some contents in the latest peace proposal.
Mr. Zelensky said that the 20-point peace plan has been completed by about 90%, but territorial issues remain a bottleneck. Kiev wants to maintain the current border of fighting, while the US proposes a free economic zone if Ukraine withdraws from the region, although the operating method is still unclear.
Mr. Zelensky also expressed his willingness to put the plan into a referendum if the desired adjustment is not achieved, provided Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire. According to Axios, US officials see this as an important step, although a recent survey shows that Ukrainian voters may reject this proposal.
Weeks-long diplomatic efforts have led to a direct meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky. European allies are stepping up discussions on ensuring post-war security for Kiev with US support.
