On July 9 (local time), according to TASS, the German Federal Parliament rejected a resolution proposed by the Green Party, which called on the Government to increase military support for Ukraine by transferring Taurus cruise missiles and many other modern equipment.
Voting results showed that only 79 MPs supported the resolution, of which 78 were members of the Green Party. Meanwhile, 510 MPs voted against and 1 person abstained, causing the proposal not to be passed.
According to the content of the resolution, the Green Party proposed that the German Government immediately respond to Kiev's request, transferring as many Taurus cruise missiles as possible from the German military's reserves.
The document also requests Berlin to direct the production of more interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system to supplement Ukraine's defense capabilities.
The Green Party also proposed significantly expanding Ukraine's long-range combat capabilities, including allowing the use of weapons capable of attacking deep into Russian territory.
This party also called on the German government to increase funding for the production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other weapons right in Ukraine, and urged international allies, including NATO, to continue to provide more long-range weapons, air defense systems and ammunition.
In addition, the resolution also proposes further tightening sanctions against Russia.
The Taurus cruise missile has long been a topic of debate in German politics. This is a missile with a range of over 500km, designed to accurately attack fortified protected targets such as underground tunnels, command centers or military infrastructure.
Supporters argue that the transfer of Taurus will help Kiev significantly strengthen its defense and counter-attack capabilities in the context of ongoing conflict.
However, many German politicians are concerned that the supply of this type of missile could increase the risk of escalating tensions, especially if they are used to attack targets deep within Russian territory.
On Moscow's side, Russia has repeatedly affirmed that the West's continued supply of weapons to Kiev will not change the situation on the battlefield but will only prolong the conflict and make the situation more complicated.
The latest vote shows that the majority of German MPs still do not support expanding the scope of military aid to Ukraine as proposed by the Green Party.
