On January 20, local rescue agencies said that a passenger train derailed near Barcelona (Spain), after a landslide wall fell onto the tracks, killing the train driver and injuring 37 passengers on board.
The accident was determined to have occurred on the section between Sant Sadurni d'Anoia and Gelida stations, about 35 minutes away from Barcelona.
According to information from medical sources, the 4 injured people are still in critical condition. Previously, many railway lines in Catalonia had to close due to heavy rain. 20 ambulances were also dispatched to the scene, along with 38 fire departments.
All necessary resources are being mobilized to ensure the safety of those affected" - Acting President of Catalonia Albert Dalmau Miranda wrote on social network X.
The accident occurred just 2 days after a train collision in southern Spain killed at least 42 people.
On January 18, 2 high-speed trains collided near Adamuz, in the Cordoba region in southern Spain.
The death toll rose to 42 on January 20, while 1 person is still missing. Investigators have ruled out the possibility of sabotage and are focusing on a 30cm gap between one of the rails as well as the possibility of welds being damaged.
Mr. Inigo Barron - head of the Spanish Railway Accident Investigation Committee - told the media that this disaster does not seem to be due to human error or signal system malfunction.
