Russia claims to intercept nearly 270 Ukrainian UAVs in 12 hours
Xinhua news agency reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense on August 23 (local time) announced that the country's air defense system intercepted and shot down 269 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in many areas of Russia within 12 hours.
A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in the past 40 days, Ukrainian armed forces have continuously used missiles and UAVs to attack Russian civilian and logistics facilities. He said that these attacks are another move by Ukraine and its supporters in the West, aimed at causing strategic losses to Russia.
According to Mr. Putin, the Russian military not only continues offensive operations on all fronts but also increases military pressure. The Russian President expressed confidence that the goals of the "special military operation" will be completed.
Houthi declares shooting down Saudi Arabian UAV in northwestern Yemen
According to Xinhua news agency, Houthi forces on August 23 (local time) announced that they had shot down a reconnaissance UAV believed to be Saudi Arabian in Hajjah province, northwest Yemen.
Saba news agency run by the Houthi quoted a military source of this force as saying that the downed UAV was a ScanEagle type and was intercepted while operating in the airspace of Hajjah province, the area bordering Saudi Arabia.
Sources revealed that the Houthi forces used a suitable weapon to shoot down the UAV, but did not provide further details.
Saudi Arabia has not commented on the above information.
The incident took place in the context of increased conflict in Yemen in the past month. During this time, government forces have intensified UAV attacks targeting positions controlled by Houthi, while Houthi launched missiles and UAVs targeting government-controlled areas in Marib, along the west coast and targets in Saudi Arabia.
6-magnitude earthquake shakes Hokkaido, Japan
According to Xinhua News Agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that an earthquake with an initial magnitude of 6 degrees occurred off the coast of Urakawa, Hokkaido Prefecture, northern Japan, on August 23 (local time).
The earthquake occurred at about 10:45 PM on the same day, with a depth of about 40km. The area most affected in Hokkaido recorded level 4 vibration on the Japanese seismic magnitude scale from 0 to 7. The epicenter was determined at coordinates 41.8 degrees North latitude and 142.9 degrees East longitude.
Japanese authorities have not issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake.
