Having received news that Ms. Cora and Mr. Peter Weiss, great friends of Vietnam, have passed away in the last days of 2025, on behalf of the Party, Government and people of Vietnam, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung sent a letter of deep condolences to all of Mr. and Mrs. Weiss's family.
Mr. Peter Weiss (born in 1925) and Mrs. Cora Weiss (born in 193), are American friends who have been attached to Vietnam for decades.
Mr. and Mrs. Weiss contributed an important voice to the movement against the Vietnamese war and later the effort to promote the normalization of bilateral relations.
During the war, the two sides strongly sponsored and supported anti-war and humanitarian activities, thereby contributing to the formation of progressive public opinion in American society supporting Vietnam.
Ms. Cora Weiss is one of the prominent leaders of the anti-war movement in the US, steadfastly fighting for an end to bombing, withdrawing troops and respecting the right to self-determination of the Vietnamese people.
After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Weiss continued to be a positive factor in promoting the activities of the Vietnam - US Emulation and Development Fund as well as contributing a strong voice to mobilize the US government to lift the embargo on Vietnam.
Mr. Peter Weiss is one of the first international visitors to Hanoi in the context of the country being surrounded by embargoes.
After the trip, he presented at the TNI Members' Conference about the situation in Vietnam, called on the international community to support the reconstruction and urged the US to remove the economic blockade with Vietnam.
These efforts have created a positive foundation for humanity and public opinion for the process of reconciliation and normalization of Vietnam-US relations, leaving a precious legacy for the people's relations of the two countries based on empathy, solidarity and belief in the value of peace.
For Vietnam's diplomatic sector, Mr. and Mrs. Weiss have always paid attention to and been deeply attached to Vietnam's diplomatic sector. The two countries regularly attend and actively support Vietnam's foreign affairs activities in the US.
At the age of over 90 years, although no longer healthy, Ms. Cora and Mr. Peter Weiss still attended the meeting between General Secretary and President To Lam and American friends on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations Summit Week (September 2024), thereby showing Mr. and Mrs. Weiss's concern for Vietnam as well as Vietnam - US relations.
On this occasion, Ms. Cora Weiss was honored to receive the Friendship Medal from General Secretary and President To Lam, affirming the recognition of our Party, State and people for her support and contribution to the revolutionary cause of Vietnam.
