TikToker Mexico shot dead while livestreaming

A female Korean TikToker was shot and killed while livestreaming, shaking public opinion in the country.

According to France24, the victim was identified as Valeria Marquez, 23, a social media influence with tens of thousands of followers on TikTok.

According to information from the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, the incident occurred on the evening of May 13 at her beauty salon in Zapopan - a suburb of Guadalajara City, western Mexico. Marquez often posts videos related to beauty and lifestyle, with some videos attracting hundreds of thousands of views.

"The victim is an individual with a presence and active influence on social networks," the prosecution agency said. The report also states that a man entered the beauty salon and fired at Marquez. According to some sources from local media, the attackers pretended to bring gifts to Marquez before taking action.

Currently, the motive for the crime has not been determined. The area where the incident occurred is known for its serious crime, the area where the drug gang Jalisco New Generation - one of the most dangerous drug trafficking organizations in Mexico - operated. However, according to Roberto alarcon - Jalisco state security coordinator, there is so far no evidence that criminal gangs are directly involved in this murder.

Zapopan city Mayor Juan Jose Frangie also confirmed that the government has not received any requests for support or reports from Marquez about her being threatened. Its unbelievable that youre murdered while youre filming, its a bad thing, he said.

The incident has once again raised concerns about violence against women in Mexico. According to the United Nations, an average of 10 women or girls are murdered every day in the country, in the context of serious crimes and gender-based discrimination.
