On July 7, the Seoul Central District Court, South Korea, said it was scheduled to hold a hearing on July 10 to consider the proposal to temporarily detain former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The petition was filed by a special prosecutor's team as part of an investigation into the controversial martial law decree issued by Mr. Yoon late last year.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Yoon was accused of abusing his power and obstructing the investigation.
The former president is believed to have mobilized guards to prevent his arrest in January. Although he was later detained, he was released after 52 days due to procedural errors.
The special prosecutor's team launched the investigation after new President Lee Jae Myung took office in June.
In addition to the martial law allegations, prosecutors have expanded the investigation into other suspected acts, including the charges of rebellion against which Yoon Suk Yeol is currently being prosecuted.
According to domestic media, the arrest was proposed to prevent the risk of Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol fleeing or interfering with witnesses. Meanwhile, Yoon Suk Yeols legal team has denied all allegations against the former president.
