On June 5, with 194 votes in favor, 3 against and 1 white, the National Assembly passed a bill to provide special advice on investigating allegations of rebellion involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The document requires a special standing advisor to investigate 11 allegations, including rebellions and military transformation, related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law in December 2024.
Although it was denied and rejected twice, in this submission to the National Assembly, the bill has expanded the scope of allegations from 6 to 11.
During the plenary session, South Korean lawmakers also approved two other special consultation bills, including one targeting former first lady Kim Keon Hee on allegations of stock price manipulation and bribery.
The third bill seeks to open an investigation into allegations targeting the Office of the President and the Ministry of National Defense that they have improperly intervened in the military investigation into the death of a marine in 2023.
The South Korean parliament has also passed a separate bill, allowing the Justice Minister to directly seek disciplinary action against prosecutors - an action that has long belonged to the Attorney General.
