The Russian Investigative Committee on February 6 said that Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev - Deputy Director General of the Russian General Department of Defense Intelligence - was shot multiple times in an apartment building on Volokolamsk Street in Moscow.
The incident was identified as an assassination, the suspect is currently unidentified and has left the scene.
According to official announcements, Mr. Alekseyev was taken to the emergency room at a hospital in the city after being shot. The health status of the victim was not specified. Russian authorities immediately launched a criminal investigation to clarify the motive and identity of the attacker.
Authorities said that the investigation force is actively searching for the suspect. Investigators and forensic experts have collected evidence at the scene, reviewed images from the surveillance camera system in the area and taken statements from witnesses present at the time of the shooting.
Mr. Vladimir Alekseyev is a senior intelligence officer, who has held many important roles. When leader Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin launched an unsuccessful uprising in June 2023, Mr. Alekseyev was one of the senior officials sent to participate in negotiations to cool down the situation.
Previously, he also commanded intelligence operations during Russia's intervention in Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad.
