SEA Games 33 tasks
The Vietnamese boxing team is managed by the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports and is tasked with winning the Gold Medal at the 33rd SEA Games. According to the boxing department (Department of Physical Education and Sports), the recent absence of the President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation - Mr. Le Tu Bao did not affect the training program of the national team fighters.
"The national team athletes are focusing on training at the present time. Preliminarily, we have grasped information about the organization of boxing at the 33rd SEA Games. This is a very difficult tournament because the host team Thailand has a very strong force, said Mr. Dam Cong Dien, head of the boxing department (Department of Physical Education and Sports). According to regulations, each team is allowed to register one athlete to participate in a weight class at the 33rd SEA Games. Therefore, the coaching staff will carefully select people to ensure achievements.
Earlier this year, the Vietnamese boxing Team participated in the 2025 World Championship with athletes Ha Thi Linh, Hoang Thi Ngoc Mai, Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi, Ngo Thi Mai Chuc, Nguyen Huyen Tran, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tran, Tran Thi To Nhu, Vo Thi Kim Anh. They have professional strengths and are predicted to be the core of Vietnamese women's boxing preparing to participate in the 33rd SEA Games.
Coaches Nguyen Nhu Cuong and Pham Thanh Hai of the Vietnam Boxing Team have commented that the current period is the most important time to accumulate physical strength for each player. Therefore, they must focus on implementing professional training plans to have a solid foundation for themselves when competing in Thailand in December.
Competing to win a boxing medal in Thailand has never been easy for players from Southeast Asian countries, including us. However, we are determined to prepare to help athletes achieve the highest spirit and compete strongly" - coach Nguyen Nhu Cuong once shared.
Long-distance road development
Vietnamese boxing wants the long-term overall development problem to touch the ASIAD medals, not just the SEA Games results. Therefore, the potential young athletes are being trained interspersed with experienced players at the Vietnam Boxing Team.
The coaches have enough time to motivate young boxers to soon mature in the future. The Vietnamese boxing team still determines that the SEA Games arena plays an important role. This is an extremely effective stepping stone to help Vietnamese athletes reach the brink of winning the ASIAD medal.
The 33rd SEA Games boxing event will organize 17 events ( nine men's events, eight women's events). "We have to calculate tactics to find opportunities to win medals for ourselves. If we ensure good professional requirements, we still believe that Vietnamese athletes will achieve good results" - Mr. Dam Cong Dien added.
The Vietnamese boxing team won 6 medals at the 32nd SEA Games in 2023 (including two Gold Medals). The champions of the 32nd SEA Games, Ha Thi Linh (63kg women's) and Bui Phuoc Tung (71kg men's), are expected to participate in this year's Games. The women's 63kg weight class is still held, but the men's 71kg class is not available, so the coaches will calculate the option of choosing the 69kg or 75kg weight class for Bui Phuoc Tung.
Runner-up Ha Thi Linh is the most classy female boxer in Vietnam at the moment. However, the coaching staff recognized the reality that Ha Thi Linh was starting to age (32 years old), so finding someone to follow in her senior's footsteps is being carried out.
This coming October, the 2025 National Boxing Championship will be held and that is an opportunity for managers to continue looking for faces that have made professional marks. The generation of famous names such as Nguyen Thi Tam, Ha Thi Linh... have achieved many international achievements, so finding a successor with equivalent qualifications will not be easy.
