Firos Mohamed, 53, has played for Malaysia and is currently the goalkeeper coach for the Penang youth team. Despite his retirement, he still participated in a friendly match between former players of Kedah and Penang clubs last weekend.
According to local media, Firos suddenly collapsed in the middle of the match due to a heart attack, although there were no signs of abnormality and he was completely healthy before. The family said he had no history of cardiovascular disease. His wife, Mrs. Fitdaanis Mat, shared in tears that her husband still maintains a regular practice routine and is very excited to compete in this friendly match.
"He plays football like a young, enthusiastic guy. Two minutes before the end of the match, he suddenly fell. Everyone was shocked," Ms. Fitdaanis said after her husband's funeral on the afternoon of July 7 in her hometown.
His youngest son, Mohamad Fairiel Danish (17 years old), was on the pitch when the incident occurred. Too moved to see his father unconscious, the boy fainted on the spot.
Firos Mohamed is one of Penang's outstanding goalkeepers, having been selected as one of six Malaysian players to participate in the training program at Barcelona in the 1980s. In the 1990s, he played for the Malaysian national team, leaving an impression on fans.
