Finding specific solutions
The two focus of athletics (Vietnam Department of Physical Training and Sports) and the Vietnam Athletics Federation focus on completing to invest in high-achievement development in the next 20-year roadmap to complete the Vietnam Athletics Development Project to 2030 and orientation to 2045 and the Athletics Investment Program in the development program of key sports participating in the Olympic and ASIAD periods 2026-2046.
Each program has specific tasks and goals. In particular, we are orienting the period of the next 20 years and after that, Vietnam Athletics will find a breakthrough in accordance with the development roadmap.
The overall development of Vietnam's athletics is necessary, so the Vietnam Athletics Development Project to 2030, with a vision to 2045, is very important.
For the first time, athletics has its own Project. By focusing on improving achievements, we are focusing on investing in the Program for developing key sports to participate in the Olympics and ASIAD for the 2026-2046 period, Deputy Head of the High-performance Sports Department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) and General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation - Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung discussed.
Many opinions from leading Vietnamese athletics experts such as Mr. Duong Duc Thuy (former head of the athletics department (General Department of Physical Education - Sports), Ms. Nguyen Hoang An (former head coach of the Vietnam athletics team), Mr. Vu Ngoc Loi (coach of the Vietnam athletics team) said that investing in Vietnam athletics to achieve high results is important, but we must build enough resources (investment costs), find people from the grassroots to create a solid foundation.
All coaches and managers of professional athletics in many localities across the country have expressed that the need to practice and become professional athletes for many students and children is decreasing. Therefore, Vietnam Athletics is facing difficulties in human resources from the grassroots level.
We have been looking for solutions and hope that when the Vietnam Athletics Development Project to 2030 and the orientation to 2045 are completed and submitted to the leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, it will be specifically considered and approved, said Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung.
Can't help but mobilize
The financial report said that the Vietnam Athletics Federation ended its 7th term with a positive fund of more than 3.4 billion VND. The 8th Athletics Federation (2025-2029) continues to seek more socialized sources to have better revenue sources.
According to the professional report, the athletics department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) has an estimated investment cost of nearly 400 billion VND in total investment through each cycle with many stages of implementing key goals in the Athletics Investment Program included in the Program for developing key sports participating in the Olympics and ASIAD for the period 2026-2046.
With more than 20 years in advance to implement the roadmap for developing Vietnam's athletics, the amount of 400 billion VND is not a large investment. Athletics is a sport that requires a lot of effort in training, coaching, competition and coaching to achieve high results.
With the Project for the development of Vietnam Athletics to 2030 and the orientation to 2045, the management of the Vietnam Athletics Federation has not been able to come up with an estimate for implementation costs.
Because according to Vice President of the Vietnam Athletics Federation - Mr. Pham The Trieu, the budget needs to be carefully calculated and based on many resources to have a preliminary estimate. The most important answer to finding the solution to how Vietnam's athletics can best develop its expertise is money.
During the 8th term (2025-2029), the Vietnam Athletics Federation proposed a requirement to strive to mobilize funding sources while improving the sports economy in athletics.
"All sports must be active, constantly developing new things and having a stable source of income to ensure sustainable investment," said athletics expert Duong Duc Thuy.
In the immediate goal of 2025, Vietnam's athletics strives to win 12 Gold Medals at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. With the 20th ASIAD in 2026 in Japan, Vietnam Athletics has the target of striving to win medals.
