ASIAD 20 will organize men's and women's indoor handball competitions. Vietnamese sports will only participate in indoor handball events.
The ASIAD 20 Organizing Committee has just conducted a professional draw for the men's and women's events.
Indoor women's handball has 7 participating teams including Japan (host), Korea, Kazakhstan, China, Hong Kong (China), Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Notably, the Organizing Committee did not draw lots to divide the women's teams into 2 groups but kept 1 group unchanged.
This means that the teams will compete in a round-robin format to determine the 4 teams with the highest results to award semi-final spots.
At ASIAD 19 held in 2023 in China, the Vietnamese women's handball team did not participate.
At that time, the Japanese team defeated South Korea 29-19 in the final to win the gold medal. This year, the Japanese women's handball team continues to be considered a championship candidate for ASIAD 20.
The participation in ASIAD 20 recognizes that the Vietnamese women's handball team is participating in the Asian Games arena for the first time.
Last year, Vietnamese women's handball players won gold medals at SEA Games 33 held in Thailand.
At the Asian level, we have only had the highest results in beach handball competitions.
The Vietnamese women's handball team won the 2025 Asian Beach Handball Championship and a gold medal in handball at the 2026 Asian Beach Games.
ASIAD 20 handball event is held from September 20 to 29.
