This decision was made not long after the Turkish team lost in the Champions League play-off round against Benfica.
The 62-year-old signed for Fenerbahce in the summer of 2024, six months after leaving AS Roma. In his first season leading the team to Istanbul, Mourinho helped Fenerbahce finish as runner-up in the Turkish national championship but did not win any title.
The team was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the National Cup, stopped at the round of 16 of the Europa League and recently continued to miss the Champions League after a 0-1 defeat to Benfica in the second leg (a 0-0 draw).
Kerem Akturkoglu's only goal in the first half forced Fenerbahce to accept relegation to the Europa League. Previously, Fenerbahce Vice President Hamdi Akin confidently declared that the team would "easily" overcome Benfica.
Mourinho has led many big teams in Europe such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham. For Fenerbahce, he became the second head coach involved with Manchester United to leave a Turkish team in the same week, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's contract termination by Besiktas.
