Nguyen Huy Hoang and the players of the Vietnamese swimming team won medals on the opening day of the 2026 Asian Open Water Championship in Indonesia.
This year's tournament attracts athletes from 18 countries and territories in the continent to participate.
On June 13, the tournament competed in the first 2 events, men's 5km and women's 5km. In the men's 5km competition, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang excellently won a silver medal when finishing second with a time of 57 minutes and 4.1 seconds.
This is an encouraging achievement of Huy Hoang personally and the Vietnamese swimming team at the tournament.
Also in the event, young athlete Mai Tran Tuan Anh won a bronze medal thanks to a result of 57 minutes 04.6 seconds.
In the men's 5km event, athlete Tianchen Lan (China) won a gold medal with a time of 56 minutes 57 seconds.
The above result is the first time Huy Hoang and Tuan Anh have won medals at the Open Water Championship at the continental level.
Also on the day of competition in the women's 5km event, athlete Vo Thi My Tien won a bronze medal with a time of 1 hour 02 minutes 20 seconds.
The female swimmer of the Vietnamese swimming team finished behind the 2 leaders of the Chinese swimming team, Wu Shutong (1 hour 02 minutes 07.6 seconds) and Chen Yijing (1 hour 02 minutes 08.2 seconds), respectively.
This year's tournament organizes events including 5km for men and women; 10km for men and women; 4x1 relay. 500m mixed men's and women's. The competition program will last until June 15.
