After nearly a week of exciting and dramatic competition from March 21-28 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the Davis Cup Junior Vietnam team competed excellently to win second place overall, thereby officially winning the right to participate in the Davis Cup Junior A/O Final Qualifying Events 2026 – the final qualifying round of Asia – Oceania region.
Notably, the Vietnamese youth team participated in the tournament with a squad consisting of only one coach, Tran Hoang Anh Khoa (Army) and two athletes, Le Tien Anh (Army) and Le Phu Gia (HCMC).
Although the force is thinner than many other teams, the two young Vietnamese tennis players played with full bravery, showing determination and impressive form. The runner-up achievement not only marks a breakthrough compared to last season but also brings pride to Vietnamese youth tennis in the regional arena.
In the quarter-finals, player Le Tien Anh showed convincing form when defeating Ahmad Bahaa Sarouji (Saudi Arabia) with a score of 2-0 (6-1, 6-2), bringing the pair back to balance and forcing them to decide by a doubles match. In the decisive match, the pair Le Tien Anh and Le Phu Gia played explosively, winning overwhelmingly 6-2, 6-1, thereby helping the Vietnamese team seal a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia, officially winning the right to enter the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the two young players continued to show impressive form when defeating the Turkmenistan team with a score of 2-0. In which, Le Tien Anh won against his opponent with a score of 7-5, 6-4 while Le Phu Gia had a victory after 2 sets with the same score of 6-3.
This convincing victory helped the Vietnamese team write their name into the final of the tournament. In the final match, despite playing with full effort and determination, the young Vietnamese players unfortunately lost to Malaysia with a score of 0-2.
However, the runner-up title is still a very proud achievement for the two talented young tennis players of Vietnamese tennis. Notably, this result also shows the clear progress of Vietnamese youth tennis when last year the Vietnam U16 team missed the finals after a 1-2 defeat to Pakistan.
With this achievement, Le Tien Anh and Le Phu Gia will continue to represent Vietnamese youth tennis to participate in Davis Cup Junior A/O Final Qualifying Events 2026, taking place from May 18-25, 2026 in Kazakhstan.
The impressive achievements of the two young tennis players not only affirm the potential of the next generation of athletes but also show positive signs in the training and development of Vietnamese youth tennis in recent years.
