Shooting is identified by the sports industry as one of the 17 key sports aiming to compete for medals at the Olympics and ASIAD in the 2026-2046 period.
According to the Development Program, every year, the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Administration will invest in and train 165 - 170 key athletes, including about 18 shooters, many of whom are second and only behind boat racing (34 athletes).
In addition, in terms of achievement goals, Vietnamese shooting will receive gold medals at the 2026 ASIAD, 2030 ASIAD, 2034; silver medals at the 2032 Olympics...
This shows the importance of shooting in the comprehensive development strategy of Vietnamese sports. However, this is also a big challenge for managers, coaches and athletes in the coming period.
In the report sent to the Workshop to contribute ideas to build a Program for developing key sports to prepare for the 2026-2046 Olympics and ASIADs, the Vietnam Shooting Federation frankly pointed out the subjective and objective difficulties.
Accordingly, facilities in many localities are still lacking and not synchronous, especially the lack of guns, bullets, facilities, equipment for training and competition... On the contrary, the investment in funding to build, upgrade shooting facilities and purchase equipment is too large, exceeding the budget capacity of many sectors and localities.
In addition, human resources lack professional coaches with high professional qualifications who are well-trained domestically and internationally, while the selection and training of athletes is not professional, inorganic, and scientific; the discovery, selection and training of young shooting athletes face many difficulties, and there is no specific roadmap...
Meanwhile, financial resources invested in sports in general and shooting in particular have not met development needs; mobilizing social resources for shooting also faces many difficulties, failing to promote the potential and desires of many businesses...
Despite facing many difficulties, Vietnamese shooting has still achieved outstanding results in recent years. In 2016, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh excellently won an Olympic gold medal, marking a historic mark for Vietnamese sports for the first time.
At the 2023 ASIAD, for the first time, Vietnamese shooting has a gold medal from Nguyen Quang Huy. In 2024, shooting along with a few other sports won 2 official tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics. In this arena, although not having any medals, athlete Trinh Thu Vinh has reached the finals twice.
In the context of requiring comprehensive development and important goals in the 2026-2046 period, the Vietnam Shooting Federation also made a number of recommendations.
One of the important factors is to focus on investing in funding, facilities, training equipment, and competition for athletes of national youth teams (Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports and Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City) similar to the National Team.
Invest in new modern training and competition equipment, meeting international standards for key and spearhead sports, capable of achieving high results in international tournaments (no spreading investment).
In addition, the Federation proposes to have specific mechanisms and treatment policies for each medal level of athletes and coaches (ASIAD, Olympics...) to create motivation and goals for striving.
In terms of expertise, it is necessary to hire highly qualified experts for shooting artillery, sung truong and flying disc guns of the national team; research and hire experts at each stage and each time when it is necessary to focus on the peak for the ASIAD and the Olympics.
Regarding the selection and training of athletes, it is necessary to build a synchronous system from the grassroots level to the national level; discover and select athletes from the movement, community, students.
