Karate martial artist Nguyen Ngoc Tram is one of the first athletes to win a gold medal for the host team at the 2026 Southeast Asian Karate Championships, currently competing at the Ninh Binh Provincial Sports Center.
In the latest results, martial artist Nguyen Ngoc Tram won the women's kata (individual) event for the championship system.
8 female kata martial artists entered the competition in this event. Representatives of the Vietnam Karate Team include Nguyen Ngoc Tram and Hoang Thi Thu Uyen.
At the end of the semi-finals, Hoang Thi Thu Uyen stopped due to losing to Torres Rebecca Cyril (Philippines) with a score of 2-3.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Ngoc Tram won 3-2 against opponent Alforte Sakura (Philippines) in the semi-finals.
In the final of the event, Nguyen Ngoc Tram defeated martial artist Torres Rebecca Cyril with a result of 4-1, winning the gold medal.
Last year, Ngoc Tram won a women's individual kata gold medal at the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship held in Brunei. This year, she successfully defended her No. 1 position.
For the men's individual kata event, the gold medal belonged to martial artist Edbert Setiabudi Christopher (Indonesia).
Martial artists Pham Minh Duc and Giang Viet Nam of the Vietnamese karate team won bronze medals in this event.
In the following days, the tournament will continue to take place in categories for kata (performance), kumite (combat) for teenagers, young, U21 and champions. The 2026 Southeast Asian Championship will continue to compete until July 12.
The entire tournament has nearly 400 athletes from 11 countries participating in the competition.
