The Vietnamese MMA mixed martial arts team won their first victory in their first participation in ASIAD 20.

Martial artist Lo Thi Phung became the first Vietnamese MMA general martial arts athlete to win 1 match at the Asian Games (ASIAD).

In the morning of the competition on September 20th in Aichi-Nagoya (Japan), Lo Thi Phung defeated opponent Aigerim Torekhanova (Kazakhstan) with a score of 3-0 in the first round of the women's 54kg modern MMA weight class.

The victory helped Lo Thi Phung reach the quarterfinals.

The coaching staff of the Vietnamese MMA General Martial Arts Team shared from Japan that Lo Thi Phung's victory in the first match brought great morale boost.

ASIAD 20 is the first Asian Games to include MMA in the official competition program.

The competition has 6 events (4 events for men, 2 events for women).

Thus, the Vietnamese MMA General Martial Arts Team had their first victory.

The 54kg weight class is not Lo Thi Phung's forte. According to the bracket, Lo Thi Phung will meet No. 1 seed Lee Bomi (Korea) in the quarter-final match taking place in the evening of September 20.

Lo Thi Phung is a player who practices her forte in jujitsu.

However, she has been introduced to and competed in many MMA general martial arts tournaments in the past time.

Earlier this year, Lo Thi Phung won a gold medal in the 49kg modern MMA weight class at the 3rd Asian Women's Championships - 2026.
