Having just bought a 25 kg bag of Dai Thom rice a week ago for 480,000 VND, Ms. Pham Thi Quynh Nhu - a tutor in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city - was surprised to have to pay an additional 10,000 VND/bag.
Ms. Nhu said: "Seeing the high price, I went to buy rice elsewhere, but the price of rice has increased, from 500 - 1,500 VND/kg. The Dai Thom rice that my family often uses is currently selling for 19,800 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND compared to last week."
According to records at retail rice stores and agents in Can Tho City, retail rice prices have increased slightly. Regular rice is from 15,000 - 16,000 VND/kg, Nang Hoa rice is from 19,500 - 20,000 VND/kg, Dai Thom rice is from 19,700 - 20,000 VND/kg...
At the rice shop of Ms. Nguyen My Linh (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city), the best-selling rice in the shop, Huong Lai, has also increased by 800 VND/kg.
Regarding the reason for the price increase, Ms. Linh said: "I imported from the dealer at a high price, so I had to increase the price. I heard from the supplier that due to the impact of storms and floods, the rice fell down, the output was low, and then many buyers went to help, so the amount of goods in the warehouse was not much."
According to the owner of this shop, even though the price of rice has increased, traders are still looking at each other to keep customers. "The buyers are regular customers, if the price is increased too high, we will lose customers" - Ms. Linh said.
