Assessment and forecast
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), as of May 15, 2025, Vietnam has exported 84,844 tons of pepper of all kinds, earning 585.2 million USD. Although output decreased by about 10% compared to the same period last year, the value increased by 45% thanks to skyrocketing export prices. In particular, the average export price of black pepper for 4 months with black pepper reached 6,749 USD/ton (up 96%), white pepper reached 8,611 USD/ton (up 73.8%).
The top export markets are still the US (accounting for 22.5%), with a decrease of up to 26.7%. Next were India with an 8% market share, up 6.4%; UAE with 6.7% market share, up 42.2%; Germany with 6.7% market share and down 9.7%; China with 4.5% and up 94.4% over the same period. Exports also increased sharply in Hong Kong (China), Australia, and Poland, but decreased in the Netherlands, Russia, the UK, Egypt, Turkey, and France.
The downward pressure comes from weak purchasing power and reserved psychology of Vietnamese garden owners. Many farming households are no longer interested in investing more, as costs are getting higher but the selling price is not attractive enough. Instead, a part has switched to growing crops with higher economic value such as durian and avocado. The expansion of the pepper area is also limited by the increasingly narrowing cultivated land fund.
