100% registration fee exemption for electric cars, people have more motivation to switch

Hạ Linh |

Electric cars are 100% exempt from registration fees for the first time until the end of 2030. The new policy creates more motivation for people and businesses to transform.

Decree No. 202/2026/ND-CP amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 10/2022/ND-CP on registration fee (LPTB) officially takes effect from March 1, 2027, in which it is noteworthy that the policy continues to apply the initial 0% registration fee rate for battery electric cars until the end of December 31, 2030.

According to new regulations, from the date the Decree takes effect until the end of 2030, electric vehicles running batteries registered for the first time will be completely exempt from registration fees. The classification of electric vehicles running batteries is carried out according to the regulations of the Minister of Construction.

This information has received the attention of many people who are planning to switch from fossil fuel vehicles to green and environmentally friendly vehicles.

As someone who has gradually changed essential vehicles and equipment in the family towards green and sustainable, Mr. Tran Viet Cuong (Duong Noi ward, Ha Dong) said that the new policy adds motivation for the family to accelerate the transition process.

Current means of transportation in the family such as motorbikes and cars, I am gradually switching from gasoline to electric vehicles. Initially, I bought an electric motorbike, then the family bought another one for my children to go to school and work. Currently, there is still a gasoline car at home and I am learning to switch to an electric car in the near future" - Mr. Cuong shared.

According to Mr. Cuong, in addition to environmental protection and fuel cost savings, being exempted from registration fees significantly reduces the rolling costs of electric vehicles.

For many families, the registration fee can be up to tens of millions of VND. When completely exempted, buyers will have more resources to invest in car interiors or other related costs. This is a very practical policy, especially in the context of electric cars becoming increasingly popular" - Mr. Cuong said.

Not only individual consumers, transport businesses also appreciate the extension of this preferential policy. According to a representative of a passenger transport business in Hanoi, the process of converting from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles requires large investment capital. Therefore, the exemption of registration fees helps reduce initial costs, creating conditions for businesses to boldly expand the scale of electric vehicle fleets.

For businesses owning dozens or hundreds of vehicles, the money saved from registration fees is very significant. This funding can be reinvested in mobile charging stations, upgrade management technology or add new vehicles" - said the business representative.

In addition to boldly expanding the scale and number of electric vehicles launched on the market, representatives of transport businesses hope that supporting infrastructure systems such as public charging stations need to be quickly replicated to meet actual needs.

Continuing to maintain a 0% registration fee for electric cars is one of the important policies to promote the green transition process in the transportation sector. In addition to encouraging people and businesses to choose low-emission vehicles, the policy also contributes to implementing commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and towards sustainable development goals.

In the context of the electric car market in Vietnam growing rapidly, extending incentives until the end of 2030 is expected to create more motivation for both consumers and businesses, thereby promoting the trend of using green vehicles to spread more widely in society.
