On October 25, Politburo member and President Luong Cuong received Australian Foreign Minister and Trade Matt Thistlethwaite on the occasion of his participation in the Opening Ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the meeting, President Luong Cuong highly appreciated Australia's active support for host Vietnam during the signing ceremony of the Convention; thanked the Australian Government for promptly supporting Vietnam with 3 million AUDs to overcome the consequences of storms No. 10 and 11. The President affirmed that Australia is one of Vietnam's important Comprehensive Strategic Partners in the Asia-Pacific region and that Australia's support demonstrates the solidarity, friendship and special attachment between the two countries.
Co- Minister Matt Thistlethwaite highly appreciated Vietnam's organization and congratulated Vietnam for successfully hosting and organizing the Opening Ceremony of the United Nations' important Convention on the prevention of cybercrime. On this occasion, the Co-Minister once again sent his condolences to the Vietnamese people in the areas affected by the recent storms and floods and shared that the Australian Government and people are always ready to accompany and support the Vietnamese people.
President Luong Cuong and Co-Minister Matt Thistlethwaite expressed their satisfaction at seeing the Vietnam - Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership develop very well, the cooperation between the two countries develop comprehensively and effectively, and have very encouraging results in implementing the Action Program to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the period 2024 - 2027 when most of the proposed activities have been completed or are being implemented on schedule.
President Luong Cuong suggested that the two countries further promote economic connectivity, soon realize the two-way trade turnover target of 20 billion USD and double two-way investment in the next 2-3 years; welcomed Australia's investment in Vietnam in the first 6 months of 2025 having exceeded the 3 billion USD mark.
President Luong Cuong also suggested that the two countries effectively implement cooperation on climate change, environment, energy, support each other in fulfilling their commitment to reduce net emissions by zero and convert to clean energy; strengthen cooperation in science and technology, promote joint training programs on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation in Vietnam.
The President emphasized that people-to-people exchanges are a strong link between the two countries, suggesting that the two countries expand friendly exchanges, increase direct flights connecting major cities and promote cultural values so that the people of Vietnam and Australia can increase mutual understanding.
Australian Foreign and Trade Minister Matt Thistlethwaite emphasized that Australia always considers Vietnam an important partner in the region and wishes to continue to develop bilateral relations in all areas of cooperation. The co-Minister affirmed that the Australian Government always welcomes and conducts graduate students and researchers from Vietnam to study in Australia, expressing his joy that Vietnam currently has the fourth largest number of students in Australia; at the same time, is ready to expand cooperation in capacity building training, share knowledge in areas where Australia has strengths such as environment, energy conversion, mining, etc.
