Recently, social networks spread the plan to continue merging communes and wards in Bac Ninh.
The information released is the arrangement and merger of 99 communes and wards currently down to 34 units, along with the new names of communes after arrangement.
At noon on August 20, in an exchange with Lao Dong Newspaper, Deputy Director of the Department of Home Affairs of Bac Ninh province Nguyen Van Phuong affirmed that the information spread was false and inaccurate.
The Department of Home Affairs is a standing agency, assigned by the Provincial People's Committee to perform tasks related to the arrangement, separation, and establishment of new administrative units.
However, according to Mr. Phuong, since the operation of the 2-level local government, the Department of Home Affairs has not developed any projects related to the continued merger of communes and wards in the province.
Currently, Bac Ninh province has 99 commune-level administrative units, including 66 communes and 33 wards.
According to Resolution No. 388/NQ-UBTVQH16 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the establishment of wards under Bac Ninh province, 12 communes are currently converted into wards on the basis of maintaining the natural area and population size. Thus, Bac Ninh still has a total of 99 commune-level administrative units, including 45 wards and 54 communes.
The whole country currently has 705 commune-level administrative units that have not met the standards. Of which, 17 units have not met both standards for area and population, 529 units have not met the area standard and 159 units have not met the population standard.
At the conference to summarize the work in the first 6 months of the year and deploy key tasks for the last 6 months of 2026 of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Director of the Department of Local Government (Ministry of Home Affairs) Phan Trung Tuan said that there will be special cases related to borders, remote areas, remote areas, complex terrain, with historical, traditional, and cultural factors.
Therefore, there are many units in the above list that may not be in the case of arrangement as in the 2023-2025 period. For the remaining small units that do not meet the standards of natural area and population size, localities can proactively study adjustments according to regulations," Mr. Tuan emphasized.
After the Central Government has a conclusion, the Government or the Ministry of Home Affairs will have guidance on implementation, and localities will proactively propose.
