Pioneering revolutionary land
Phong Hoa commune, Lai Vung district, Dong Thap province, formerly Phong Hoa village, O Mon district, Can Tho province (now Can Tho city), is known as the pioneer revolutionary land.
In 1925, after Nguyen Ai Quoc founded the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association to attract patriotic youth to participate and spread progressive revolutionary ideas to Vietnam, Phong Hoa took the lead in receiving this revolutionary wave.
In 1926, Mr. Tran Kim Giap - a patriotic young man in Phong Hoa - went to O Mon district (Can Tho) to contact patriotic elements and then returned to launch and build a revolutionary movement in the locality.
After being enlightened by revolutionary Chau Van Liem (1902-1930) and admitted to the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association, Mr. Giap was assigned to work in Thoi Lai (O Mon district), and often returned to Phong Hoa to educate patriotism to youth, students and working people.
After the Annam Communist Party was established in Cochinchina on November 7, 1929, on November 29, 1929, Phong Hoa was one of the few first Annam Communist Party branches in Can Tho province to be established. This was the premise and important basis for Phong Hoa to establish the first Vietnamese Communist Party branch in Can Tho province in 1930, right after the Communist Party was established on February 3, 1930.
Guidance and gratitude
The early establishment of the Party organization in Phong Hoa is considered a major historical turning point, an important mark in the local historical process. Because it not only laid the foundation for leading and directing the revolutionary line in the Hau River area (at that time belonging to O Mon district, Can Tho province) but also spread throughout the Lai Vung area and Sa Dec province at that time.
Moreover, it also ended the period of crisis in the national salvation path and the leadership class, opening a new chapter in the nation's history.
From here, under the leadership of the Communist Party Cell, the local revolutionary movement had conditions to develop more firmly, contributing to leading all classes of people to promote the tradition of fighting against the invaders and their lackeys until the day of total victory.
During the resistance war against the US to save the country, the Party Cell led the people and armed forces of the commune to coordinate with superior forces to fight the enemy in more than 990 large and small battles, eliminating 2,897 enemies from combat, capturing dozens of tons of guns, ammunition, military uniforms, and military equipment...
With great achievements, on August 22, 1989, the Party Committee and people of Phong Hoa commune were awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.
To mark this remarkable historical event, the Party, government and people joined hands to build a monument in Tan Loi hamlet, Phong Hoa commune, Lai Vung district. On March 28, 2002, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province decided to rank this place as a provincial historical and cultural relic.
This is a large-scale revolutionary historical and cultural project, demonstrating the attention of the Party and State, the efforts of all levels and sectors, and the will of the people of Lai Vung. Today, this place is one of the "red addresses" for local history education.
