On April 20, the People's Council of Soc Trang province approved the Project to reorganize commune-level administrative units of the province. Accordingly, the number of communes, wards and towns in the province will decrease sharply from 108 units to 43 units (including 8 wards and 35 communes) after completing the merger process.

According to the detailed plan, Soc Trang City will form 3 new wards on the basis of merging existing wards. Phu Loi ward was established from the merger of wards 1, 2, 3 and 4. Merging wards 5, 6, 7 and 8 into Soc Trang ward. My Xuyen ward will be formed from the merger of ward 10 with My Xuyen town and Dai Tam commune (My Xuyen district).
In Vinh Chau town, there are 3 new wards: Vinh Phuoc (merging Vinh Phuoc ward and Vinh Tan commune), Vinh Chau (merging ward 1, ward 2 and Lac Hoa commune), Khanh Hoa (merging Khanh Hoa ward, Vinh Hiep commune and Hoa Dong commune) along with 2 communes: Vinh Hai and Lai Hoa.
Nga Nam town will have 2 wards, Nga Nam (merging wards 1, 2 and Vinh Quoi commune) and My Quoi (merging ward 3, My Binh commune, My Quoi commune) and Tan Long commune, expanded from the merger of Long Binh commune, Tan Long commune (under Nga Nam town) and Thanh Tan commune (under Thanh Tri district).
After the merger, Ke Sach district will have 6 communes, including Nhon My commune (merging An My, Nhon My communes and Song Phung communes from Long Phu district); An Lac Thon commune (merging Xuan Hoa, Trinh Phu communes and An Lac Thon town); Ke Sach commune (merging Ke An, Ke Thanh communes and Ke Sach town); Thoi An Hoi commune (merging Thoi An Hoi and An Lac Tay communes); Dai Hai commune (merging Dai Hai and Ba Trinh communes) and Phong Nam commune.
My Xuyen district will have 4 communes, including Hoa Tu commune (merging Hoa Tu 1 commune and Hoa Tu 2 commune); Gia Hoa commune (merged Thanh Quoi commune and Gia Hoa 2 commune); Nhu Gia commune (merged Thanh Phu commune and Gia Hoa 1 commune) and Ngoc To commune (merged Tham Don commune, Ngoc To commune and Ngoc Dong commune).
Chau Thanh district also decreased to 4 communes, Phu Tam commune (merged with Phu Tam commune and Chau Thanh town); An Ninh commune (merger of An Ninh commune and An Hiep commune); Thuan Hoa commune (merger of Phu Tan and Thuan Hoa communes); Ho Dac Kien commune (merged with Ho Dac Kien and Thien My commune).
Long Phu district left 4 communes, Truong Khanh commune (merged with Hau Thanh commune, Truong Khanh commune and Phu Huu commune); Dai Ngai commune (merging Dai Ngai town and Long Duc commune); Tan Thanh commune (merging Tan Hung commune, Chau Khanh and Tan Thanh commune); Long Phu Commune (merging Long Phu commune and Long Phu town).
Tran De district will have 5 communes, Thanh Thoi An (merged Thanh Thoi An and Thanh Thoi Thuan communes); Tai Van commune (merging members of An and Tai Van commune); Lieu Tu Commune (merging Lieu Tu commune and members of Binh); Hoi Thuong Lich Commune (merging of Lich Hoi Thuong commune and Lich Hoi Thuong town); Tran De commune (merging Tran De town, Dai An 2 commune and Trung Trung commune).
My Tu district has 4 communes, My Tu commune (merging with Huynh Huu Nghia town, My Tu commune and My Thuan commune); Long Hung commune (merging Hung Phu and Long Hung communes); My Huong commune (merged with Thuan Hung commune, Phu My and My Huong commune) and My Phuoc commune.
Thanh Tri district will have 3 communes: Phu Loc commune (merging with Phu Loc town, Thanh Tri commune and Hung Loi town); Vinh Loi commune (merging Vinh Loi commune, Vinh Thanh and Chau Hung commune) and Lam Tan commune (merged with Lam Tan commune, Lam Kiet and Tuan Tuc commune).
Cu Lao Dung district has 2 communes, An Thanh commune (merging Cu Lao Dung town, An Thanh 1 commune, An Thanh Tay commune and An Thanh Dong commune) and Cu Lao Dung commune (merging An Thanh 2 commune, An Thanh 3 commune, An Thanh Nam commune and Dai An 1 commune).
